How Much Water Do You Really Need?

The popular "8 glasses a day" rule is a simplification. Actual water needs vary based on body weight, physical activity, climate, diet, and health conditions. This calculator gives a personalized daily hydration target.

General Guidelines

  • WHO / European Food Safety Authority:
Men: ~2.5 liters/day (including food water)
Women: ~2.0 liters/day (including food water)
  • National Academies of Medicine (USA):
    Men: ~3.7 liters/day total water
    Women: ~2.7 liters/day total water

Calculation Method

A common formula: 35 ml per kg of body weight as a baseline, adjusted for:

  • +500 ml per 30 minutes of intense exercise
  • +300–500 ml in hot weather
  • Pregnant women: +300 ml above baseline
  • Breastfeeding: +500–700 ml above baseline

Signs of Dehydration

  • Dark yellow urine (pale yellow = well hydrated)
  • Headache, fatigue, difficulty concentrating
  • Dry mouth and skin
  • Reduced urine output

Water from Food

Approximately 20% of daily water intake comes from food. High-water foods include cucumber (97% water), lettuce (96%), tomato (94%), watermelon (92%), and orange (88%).
