How to Calculate Tiles Needed

Tiling requires ordering extra tiles to account for cuts around edges, corners, and obstacles, plus breakage. Ordering too few means a potentially impossible-to-match reorder later — always over-order.

Tile Calculator Formula

  1. Calculate room area: Length x Width (m2)
  2. Calculate tile area: Tile length x Tile width (m2)
  3. Divide room area by tile area = number of tiles (exact)
  4. Add waste factor: 10% for simple layouts, 15% for diagonal, 20% for complex patterns

Example

Room: 4.5 m x 3.2 m = 14.4 m2
Tile: 60 cm x 60 cm = 0.36 m2
Exact tiles: 14.4 / 0.36 = 40 tiles
With 15% waste: 40 x 1.15 = 46 tiles (buy 48 for safety)

Waste Factor Guide

Layout PatternRecommended Waste
Simple straight grid10%
Offset / brick pattern10–15%
Diagonal (45 degrees)15–20%
Herringbone15–20%
Complex / mosaic20–25%

Planning Tips

  • Buy tiles from the same batch/lot number for consistent color
  • Store extra tiles from each project for future repairs
  • Start tiling from the center of the room and work outward
  • For large format tiles (over 60x60 cm), use a larger notched trowel
