Fuel Economy Units Explained

Fuel economy is measured differently around the world. The US and UK use miles per gallon (MPG); Europe, Australia, and most other countries use liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km); some countries use km/L.

Conversion Formulas

  • L/100km to MPG (US): MPG = 235.21 / L/100km
  • MPG to L/100km: L/100km = 235.21 / MPG
  • L/100km to km/L: km/L = 100 / L/100km

Calculating Your Actual Fuel Economy

  1. Fill tank completely and note odometer reading
  2. Drive until tank is partially empty
  3. Fill tank again, noting liters added and new odometer reading
  4. L/100km = (Liters added / Distance driven) x 100

Average Fuel Consumption by Vehicle Type

Vehicle TypeTypical L/100kmTypical MPG
Small car (petrol)5–734–47
Medium car7–1024–34
SUV9–1318–26
Diesel car4–734–59
Hybrid4–639–59
Electric (kWh/100km)13–20 kWh

Tips to Improve Fuel Economy

  • Maintain proper tire pressure (10% underinflation = 2.5% higher fuel use)
  • Remove excess weight from the vehicle
  • Avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking
  • Use cruise control on highways
  • Service the engine regularly (clean air filter, fresh oil)

Frequently Asked Questions

For a compact/sedan: 5-7 L/100km (34-47 MPG) is good. SUVs: 7-10 L/100km (24-34 MPG). Hybrid cars: 3-5 L/100km (47-78 MPG).
Fill up completely, zero your trip meter, drive normally, then fill up again. Divide liters filled by kilometers driven × 100.
MPG = 235.214 ÷ L/100km. For example, 8 L/100km = 235.214 ÷ 8 = 29.4 MPG (US).
