Understanding Ovulation

Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from an ovary, typically occurring once per menstrual cycle. The egg survives 12–24 hours after release. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, creating a fertile window of roughly 6 days each cycle.

When Does Ovulation Occur?

Ovulation typically occurs 14 days before the start of the next period, regardless of cycle length:

  • 28-day cycle: ovulation around day 14
  • 30-day cycle: ovulation around day 16
  • 35-day cycle: ovulation around day 21

Your Fertile Window

The most fertile days are the 2–3 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Having intercourse during this window maximizes the chance of conception.

Signs of Ovulation

  • Cervical mucus changes: Clear, slippery, egg-white-like texture
  • Basal body temperature rise: 0.2–0.5°C increase after ovulation
  • Ovulation pain (Mittelschmerz): Brief one-sided pelvic discomfort
  • LH surge: Detected by ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) 24–48 hours before ovulation

Irregular Cycles

For cycles that vary significantly in length, this calculator provides an estimated window based on average cycle length. For irregular cycles, tracking basal body temperature or using OPKs provides more reliable timing information.

Medical Note

This calculator provides an estimate based on average cycle data. If you have been trying to conceive for 12 months (or 6 months if over 35) without success, consult a fertility specialist.

Frequently Asked Questions

The highest chance of conception is within 1-2 days before and on the day of ovulation. Sperm can survive 3-5 days, so the fertile window spans about 6 days.
Signs include a slight rise in basal body temperature, changes in cervical mucus (clear and stretchy like egg whites), and mild pelvic pain.
Regular cycles of 24-35 days are considered normal. Irregular cycles can make predicting ovulation harder and may indicate hormonal issues worth discussing with a doctor.
