How to Calculate Appliance Running Costs

Understanding how much each appliance costs to run helps identify energy hogs and reduce your electricity bill. The calculation is straightforward once you know the wattage and usage hours.

Electricity Cost Formula

Energy (kWh) = Power (W) x Time (hours) / 1,000

Cost = Energy (kWh) x Electricity Rate (per kWh)

Example: 60-Watt Bulb

Running for 5 hours/day at $0.25/kWh:

  • Daily: 60 x 5 / 1,000 = 0.3 kWh x $0.25 = $0.075/day
  • Monthly: $0.075 x 30 = $2.25/month
  • Yearly: $27.38/year

Typical Appliance Power Consumption

ApplianceWattsCost/month (5 hrs/day, $0.25/kWh)
LED bulb10 W$0.38
Laptop50 W$1.88
TV (55-inch LED)120 W$4.50
Refrigerator150 W (24 hrs)$27
Air conditioner1,500 W$56
Clothes dryer5,000 W$19 (1 hr/day)

Biggest Energy Savers

  • Replace old incandescent bulbs with LEDs: saves up to 85% per bulb
  • Upgrade to A+++ rated appliances
  • Install smart power strips to eliminate standby power
  • Set water heater to 55 C instead of 60 C
