How to Calculate Concrete Volume

Concrete is ordered by volume (cubic meters in metric, cubic yards in imperial). Calculating accurately prevents costly over-ordering or project delays from under-ordering.

Slab Formula

Volume = Length x Width x Thickness (all in meters)

Example: Driveway 5 m x 3 m x 0.15 m thick = 2.25 m3

Common Project Volumes

ApplicationTypical Thickness
Walkway / footpath75–100 mm
Driveway100–150 mm
House floor slab100–150 mm
Garage slab100–125 mm
Footing / foundation200–300 mm

Bags vs Ready-Mix

One 25 kg bag of ready-mix concrete yields approximately 0.012 m3 when mixed. One 50 kg bag yields approximately 0.025 m3.

For our 2.25 m3 example: 2.25 / 0.025 = 90 bags of 50 kg, or order 2.5 m3 ready-mix (add 10% waste).

Tips

  • Always order 5–10% extra to account for waste and spillage
  • Check local concrete truck minimum order (typically 3–4 m3)
  • For small projects under 0.5 m3, bag concrete is more economical
  • Standard concrete mix ratio (by volume): 1 cement : 2 sand : 4 gravel

Normal concrete weighs approximately 2,300-2,500 kg per cubic meter (about 4,000-4,300 lb per cubic yard).
Yes, always add 5-10% for spillage, uneven subgrade, and finishing. It is better to have a little extra than to run short.
