How to Calculate Paint Needed

Paint coverage varies by product, surface texture, and number of coats. Using too little leaves uneven coverage; buying too much wastes money. This calculator gives you an accurate estimate based on your room dimensions and paint specifications.

Calculation Steps

  1. Calculate total wall area: (2 x (length + width)) x ceiling height
  2. Subtract doors and windows (avg door: 2 m2, window: 1.5 m2)
  3. Multiply by number of coats (typically 2 for new walls)
  4. Divide by paint coverage (typically 10–12 m2 per liter)

Example

Room: 4 m x 3.5 m, ceiling 2.5 m, one door, one window, 2 coats.

  • Wall area: (2 x (4 + 3.5)) x 2.5 = 37.5 m2
  • Less openings: 37.5 - 2 - 1.5 = 34 m2
  • For 2 coats: 34 x 2 = 68 m2 coverage needed
  • At 10 m2/L: 6.8 liters needed (buy 7–8 L to be safe)

Paint Coverage by Type

Paint TypeCoverage per Liter
Emulsion / Latex8–12 m2
Gloss / Satin14–16 m2
Primer8–10 m2
Masonry paint4–6 m2

Tips for Accurate Coverage

  • Always add 10–15% extra for waste and touch-ups
  • Porous or rough surfaces require 20–30% more paint
  • Dark colors covering light walls may need 3 coats
  • Keep leftover paint in an airtight container for future touch-ups
