What Is Dimensional Weight?

Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers that accounts for the space a package occupies in relation to its actual weight. If a large, light package takes up more space than a small, heavy one, carriers charge based on whichever is greater: actual weight or dimensional weight.

DIM Weight Formula

DIM Weight = (Length x Width x Height) / DIM Factor

Dimensions are in centimeters or inches depending on the carrier.

DIM Factors by Carrier

CarrierDIM Factor (cm)DIM Factor (inches)
FedEx / UPS (domestic)5,000139
FedEx / UPS (international)5,000139
DHL Express5,000139
USPS Priority MailNot applied (flat rate boxes)194

Example Calculation

Package: 60 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm, actual weight: 2 kg

  • Volume: 60 x 40 x 30 = 72,000 cm3
  • DIM weight: 72,000 / 5,000 = 14.4 kg
  • Billable weight: max(2, 14.4) = 14.4 kg

The carrier charges for 14.4 kg even though the box weighs only 2 kg.

Reducing Shipping Costs

  • Use the smallest box that safely holds your product
  • Consider flat-rate options for heavy items in small boxes
  • Use padded envelopes instead of boxes for soft goods
  • Negotiate custom DIM factors with carriers for high-volume shippers

Frequently Asked Questions

Dimensional weight (DIM weight) = (L × W × H) / carrier divisor. Carriers use it so light but bulky packages pay their fair share of transport costs.
FedEx and UPS use a divisor of 5,000 for international shipments. Domestic US rates changed to 139 in/lb (about 4,000 cm³/kg). Check current carrier websites for exact rates.
Use the smallest box that fits your product. Reduce box dimensions to lower the billable weight. Avoid excessive void fill that inflates box size.
