Unweighted vs Weighted GPA

High schools calculate GPA two ways:

  • Unweighted GPA (4.0 scale): All courses graded equally. An A in gym = an A in AP Chemistry = 4.0 points.
  • Weighted GPA: Advanced courses receive bonus points. AP/IB: A = 5.0, Honors: A = 4.5. This rewards academic rigor.

B3.03.54.0
C2.02.53.0
D1.01.52.0
F0.00.00.0

How College Admissions View GPA

  • Many colleges recalculate GPA using their own system, stripping extra weighting
  • Course rigor (number of AP/IB courses taken) often matters as much as GPA
  • Upward grade trends can compensate for a weaker early high school record
  • Most competitive universities expect 3.8+ unweighted GPA

Cumulative vs Semester GPA

Semester GPA covers one term. Cumulative GPA is the average across all semesters. This calculator computes both when you enter grades for multiple semesters.

Frequently Asked Questions

Unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale for all courses. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder courses: +0.5 for Honors, +1.0 for AP/IB. Colleges consider both.
Ivy League and top-10 schools typically admit students with unweighted GPAs above 3.9. Most selective schools look for 3.7+. State universities often accept 3.0+.
GPA is one of many factors. Test scores, extracurriculars, essays, and recommendations also matter. A high GPA with weak other factors may not be enough for top schools.
