The Speed-Distance-Time Triangle

Speed, distance, and time are related by one of the most fundamental formulas in physics and everyday life. Knowing any two values allows you to calculate the third.

Formulas

  • Speed: Speed = Distance / Time
  • Distance: Distance = Speed x Time
  • Time: Time = Distance / Speed

Unit Consistency

Always use consistent units:

  • km/h and km and hours
  • mph and miles and hours
  • m/s and meters and seconds

Mixing units (e.g., km/h for speed but minutes for time) requires conversion first.

Practical Examples

  • Trip time: Driving 450 km at 90 km/h → Time = 450/90 = 5 hours
  • Speed check: Covered 120 miles in 2.5 hours → Speed = 120/2.5 = 48 mph
  • Range: Travelling at 110 km/h for 3.5 hours → Distance = 110 x 3.5 = 385 km

Average Speed

Average speed for a round trip is NOT simply the average of the two speeds. If you travel 100 km at 60 km/h and return at 40 km/h:

  • Total distance: 200 km
  • Total time: (100/60) + (100/40) = 1.67 + 2.5 = 4.17 hours
  • Average speed: 200 / 4.17 = 48 km/h (not 50 km/h)

Frequently Asked Questions

Time = Distance / Speed = 500 / 100 = 5 hours. With stops and traffic, add 20-30%.
Highway speed limits vary by country: 130 km/h (EU), 120 km/h (Australia), 60-75 mph / 97-121 km/h (US). Average travel speed is usually 10-15% below the limit.
Divide km/h by 1.60934 to get mph. For example, 100 km/h = 62.1 mph.
