Cylinder Volume Formula

A cylinder is a 3D shape with circular cross-sections of equal size along its height. Volume is calculated as:

V = pi x r2 x h

  • r = radius of the circular base
  • h = height of the cylinder
  • pi = 3.14159...

If you know the diameter instead of radius: r = diameter / 2

Example Calculations

  • Water tank: radius 0.5 m, height 1.2 m → V = pi x 0.25 x 1.2 = 0.942 m3 = 942 liters
  • Pipe: diameter 100 mm (r=50 mm), length 3 m → V = pi x 0.0025 x 3 = 0.0236 m3 = 23.6 liters

Volume in Different Units

This calculator converts the result to:

  • Cubic centimeters (cm3)
  • Cubic meters (m3)
  • Liters (L)
  • US gallons
  • UK gallons

Partial Fill Level

For a horizontal cylinder filled to a certain height, the calculation is more complex. This calculator handles standard upright cylinders. For horizontal or partially filled tanks, note that the calculation requires integration of a circular cross-section.

Practical Uses

  • Calculating water tank, fuel tank, or silo capacity
  • Determining pipe volume for plumbing projects
  • Finding concrete needed for cylindrical columns or posts
  • Sizing hot water heaters and storage vessels

Frequently Asked Questions

V = π × r² × h, where r is the radius and h is the height. For diameter d: V = π × (d/2)² × h.
Exactly 1,000 liters in 1 cubic meter. So a cylinder of 0.5 m³ holds 500 liters.
Model the pipe as a cylinder using the inner diameter. V = π × (inner radius)² × length.
