What Is Percentage Change?

Percentage change measures how much a value has increased or decreased relative to its original value. A positive result means an increase; a negative result means a decrease.

Percentage Change Formula

% Change = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ |Old Value|) × 100

Increase example: Price goes from $40 to $52: ((52 − 40) ÷ 40) × 100 = +30%

Decrease example: Stock drops from $200 to $155: ((155 − 200) ÷ 200) × 100 = −22.5%

Percentage Change vs Percentage Difference

  • Percentage change uses the original (old) value as the base — it tracks change over time.
  • Percentage difference uses the average of the two values as the base — it compares two values without a defined "before/after."

Common Applications

  • Finance: Year-over-year revenue growth, stock performance
  • Retail: Price increase/decrease, markdown percentages
  • Science: Experimental error, data analysis
  • Health: Weight loss/gain, blood pressure changes

Tip: Symmetry Trap

A 50% decrease followed by a 50% increase does NOT return to the original value. $100 → −50% = $50 → +50% = $75. Be careful when combining percentage changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Percentage increase = ((New - Old) / Old) × 100. If a price goes from $200 to $250, that is a 25% increase.
Percentage decrease = ((Old - New) / Old) × 100. If a price drops from $250 to $200, that is a 20% decrease.
Because the base changes. A 50% drop from $100 gives $50. A 50% gain on $50 gives only $75, not $100. You need a 100% gain to recover a 50% loss.
