Three Types of Average

In statistics, "average" can mean different things depending on context. The three most common measures of central tendency are mean, median, and mode — each useful for different situations.

Mean (Arithmetic Average)

Formula: Mean = Sum of all values / Count of values

Example: {2, 4, 6, 8, 10} → Mean = 30/5 = 6

Best used when: data has no extreme outliers.

Median (Middle Value)

Sort values; the median is the middle value (or average of two middle values for even counts).

Example: {1, 3, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9} → Median = 6

Best used when: data is skewed by outliers (e.g., income data where a few very high earners distort the mean).

Mode (Most Frequent Value)

The value that appears most often. A dataset can have no mode, one mode, or multiple modes.

Example: {1, 2, 2, 3, 4} → Mode = 2

Best used when: finding the most typical value (e.g., shoe size, exam score).

Range

Range = Maximum value - Minimum value. Measures how spread out the data is.

Example: {3, 7, 15, 22} → Range = 22 - 3 = 19

Which Average Should You Use?

  • House prices in a neighborhood → use median (outliers skew the mean)
  • Student exam scores → use mean (normally distributed)
  • Most popular product size → use mode

Frequently Asked Questions

Mean is the arithmetic average. Median is the middle value when sorted. Mode is the most frequent value. For skewed data, the median is often more representative than the mean.
Use median when your data has outliers. For example, average income is often misleading because a few billionaires pull the mean up — median income is more typical.
Range = maximum value - minimum value. It measures the spread of your data. A large range indicates high variability; a small range indicates values are clustered together.
